Berta

I was born in Barcelona and I’ve always studied here, except for a year abroad in Ireland. My parents decided that it was the right time for me to go. Since you’re developing, your brain is at the best moment to grasp concepts. At first, I thought it would be an incredible experience. I didn’t fully realise that I was leaving my country and would be completely on my own. I was going to struggle a bit. But once I met people, started feeling more comfortable, and my English gradually improved, I no longer wanted to return to Barcelona. I was there for a year, and it was really cool. Upon my return, I began studying medicine at Hospital Clinic, and now I am specialising here.

Kenya was one of my most meaningful trips. I spent a month there during my medical studies, volunteering with children in a medical setting. I lived in an orphanage, surrounded by kids from 1 to 18 years old. Seeing how they lived really shocked me, and being there made me truly understand their reality. I think it was the first time I had ever come face to face with poverty.

In the past two years, I’ve become a travel coordinator. Travelling gives me life. You know that moment when you book a flight, click the confirmation button, and suddenly feel a rush of adrenaline? That instant, when you realise it’s happening, is pure energy. I always tell everybody that travelling also gives you the opportunity to meet people. And amazing people. In 2022 I was in Costa Rica. To reach Tortuguero, I had two options: a super expensive transfer through the river or an endless series of buses. Both sounded awful, so I decided to take a small plane, but the flight was cancelled the day before. In the end, I had to book the expensive transfer, but since I was the last one, they opened a new route just for me. I was about to leave when I saw a girl about my age who looked exhausted from the week. She was struggling and had also booked the transfer last minute. We started talking, and within an hour, we had become best friends. She’s probably one of the most important people in my life right now.

I believe everything moves, and we are moved by love. You can fall in love with many things, and that will shape your life in its own way—the love for travelling, the love for a person, the love for a career. But love can change at any moment, when you encounter something new and fall for it, and suddenly, you have another priority.
“Don’t worry so much about everything, stop anticipating things” could say one of my dearest friends. In difficult moments, when everything feels fragile, humanity reveals itself—in gestures, in words, in the way we support each other. We don’t know what the future holds, but we can choose to live with authenticity, connecting with the people around us. So, just live your life and remember time flies.
