Hasaan

I was born in Canada, in a city just outside Toronto, where I’ve lived most of my life. I hold an undergraduate degree in psychology and recently completed a Master’s in Global Justice, Religion, and Culture. Currently, I’m pursuing a PhD in Religious Studies, which I’m very excited about.

Canada is my home, and I’m grateful for the peace and security it offers. Yet, I feel a responsibility to stand in solidarity with those who don’t have these basic rights.
I truly believe that the genocide in Gaza is the most urgent issue of our time. In Palestine, the forces threatening our planet converge: authoritarian militarism, unchecked global capitalism, and imperialist geopolitics. The Palestinians respond by refusing to give up their lives and land, setting an example of resistance and survival that inspires and unites us.
This is not new. Indigenous peoples worldwide, including in the Americas, know this struggle intimately. Their histories are the foundation of my commitment to justice—not just in Gaza and Palestine, but wherever oppression exists.

My first solo trip was in the summer of 2022—a month backpacking across Europe to celebrate finishing my undergrad. I wanted to challenge myself, find independence, and discover what I truly wanted from life. Since then, I’ve realized there’s no single path or timeline to follow; it’s okay to take risks and time to understand yourself. But I also learned you can’t run from your problems: you might climb mountains or have new adventures, but if you don’t make peace within, the anguish remains.
Traveling alone has been a blessing. I’ve encountered so much kindness from strangers, which convinced me that people are fundamentally good. This inspires me to pass on that kindness to others, whether they’re travelers or not.
I believe it’s important to step out of your comfort zone, but also vital to know your limits. Make a plan, learn about the place you’re visiting, and stay flexible enough to change your plans if needed.

The world is vast and beautiful, full of amazing people and breathtaking places. It calls us to be open and receptive to learning and experiencing it all. Our shared humanity binds us—this is our common home, and we must come together to protect it.

The world can already be a harsh and cruel place, so be kind and compassionate.
